Brand Development Specialist
Denise Marcil began her career in the editorial departments of Avon Books and Simon and Schuster, Inc. where she learned to identify talented writers, edit books and negotiate contracts. In 1977 she opened her agency. Her passion for stories led to representing commercial fiction, and her pragmatism made her the perfect agent for self-help nonfiction. She has discovered hundreds of authors in both disciplines and built the careers of many, who have become internationally successful, bestselling authors. She now represents and seeks authors under Marcil-O’Farrell with the goal of developing new brand names. Here are some examples, a novelist Sherryl Woods, and a parenting and health expert team, Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears, whose brands Denise helped develop.
The New York Times’ # 1 best-selling author of women’s fiction.
A former journalist with over ten years as a newspaper television critic, Sherryl Woods began writing series romances for Dell, Bantam, Berkley, Silhouette and Harlequin. She has written more than 140 novels including romances, 13 mysteries in two series—the Amanda Roberts series and the Molly DeWitt series, and women’s fiction. Forty-one novels have been New York Times’ bestsellers. Her popular Chesapeake Shores series will be a television series on the Hallmark Channel in 2016. Denise Marcil has worked with Sherryl Woods for 30 years, guiding and strategizing her growth from series romance writer to a fine storyteller of women’s contemporary fiction today.
Denise and Sherryl worked together to build the Sherryl Woods brand. Witty dialogue and clever repartee are Sherryl’s strong suits, which made her romantic mystery series stand out. These mysteries complemented her series romances and widened her audience. Next she wrote full-length contemporary romances, all while she continued to write Silhouette and Harlequin series romances to solidify and grow her romance audience.
Vivid characters, extended families and small-town settings characterized many of Sherryl Woods’s series romances. She took those elements and her audience into mainstream novels, creating two wildly successful series, The Sweet Magnolias and Chesapeake Shores. The Sweet Magnolias total 11 books with a branded Sweet Magnolias Cookbook. The Chesapeake Shores series includes 13 novels, with the television series debuting on the Hallmark Channel in 2016.
With print and eBooks in multiple languages, audio books and a television series, Sherryl Woods is an international brand. Denise Marcil is proud to represent her. Sherryl’s websites are www.sherrylwoods.com.

Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears, R.N.
The most respected childcare experts around the world.
Dr. William Sears tells the story of seeking literary representation after publishing a few childcare books. He interviewed many agents, and several advised him to write specific books. He wasn’t interested. Denise Marcil asked him, “What do you want to write next?” She sensed he knew what parents wanted to know. He liked her response and chose her to represent him and his wife, Martha. She guided Dr. Sears and Martha, a nurse, lactation consultant and expert and mother of their eight children through the writing of a proposal for THE BABY BOOK: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two. Published in 1993, the book, now in its third edition, has sold more than one million copies in the U.S., nearly as many in China and hundreds of thousands in Russia and other foreign countries.
Published by Little, Brown, since 1993, the Sears Parenting Library includes 21 books and four outstanding children’s picture books. A son, Dr. Robert Sears, who is an expert in vaccines and autism, is sole author of The Vaccine Book and The Autism Book. The Sears family of physicians, Dr. Jim Sears (of the popular TV show The Doctors), Dr. Robert Sears and Dr. Peter Sears, are co-authors along with Dr. Bill and Martha Sears of several books in the Sears Parenting Library.
Through the years Denise Marcil has worked closely with Dr. Bill and Martha Sears, advising them on marketing and publicity and which books to write next for “the Library.” She has marketed their names, reputation and books around the world, licensing their books in 23 foreign countries. Dr. Sears is now the most respected physician in China. With this reputation and the success of their books in China, Denise Marcil and business partner Anne Marie O’Farrell suggested the Sears write a book specifically for the Chinese market.
When Dr. Sears’s interest in health and wellness extended to adults, Denise Marcil encouraged him through his ten years of writing Prime Time Health: A Scientifically Proven Plan for Feeling Young and Living Longer. He continues to write on wellness for adults and children.
